What Cicadas Look Like?

Cicadas are 1 - 1 1/2 inches long. They are stout with a green or brown body and black markings on the body. They have four, clear, fly-like wings and the first pair is much longer than their abdomen. The wings which are folded over their back look like a tent.

Should I kill cicadas?

Some may be repulsed at the thought of so many loud, noisy, flying insects and a handful might even attempt to kill the bugs. But experts say there is nothing to fear, noting that the animals provide several ecological benefits.

Are cicadas harmful?

"The thing about cicadas is that they're not toxic … they don't bite and they don't sting. So in and of themselves, they're not dangerous," said Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinary officer for the American Kennel Club.
