Where Does Defendant Stand?

Defendants should sit or stand as directed by their attorneys (if they have counsel) or by the judge, courtroom clerk, or bailiff. The custom is different in different proceedings and different courtrooms. For example, during arraignment, defendants typically stand, facing the judge.

Where does the defendant stand in court?

On the left side sits the Plaintiff, and on the right side sits the Defendant – this is so the Judge knows who is who.

What side does defendant sit?

Counsel tables are at the back of the well. This is where lawyers and their clients sit during court trial or other court proceedings. Typically, the Plaintiff's table is on the right side, and the Defendant's table is on the left side. However, the Plaintiff's side has the right to sit closest to the jury box.
