In-order to access the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park as well as the Kalalau Trail, visitors have to go through Hāʻena SP. Hāʻena SP now requires advanced reservations for entry except for those with valid camping permits for the Nāpali Coast SWP.
Do you need permits to hike in Kauai?
Anyone proceeding along the Kalalau Trail past Hanakāpīʻai Valley (2 miles in) must possess a valid Napali Coast State Wilderness Park camping permit whether or not you plan to camp. This same permit allows you to camp at one of two different places: Hanakoa or Kalalau. Permits are $35 per-person per-day.
How do you get a Napali Coast permit?
Napali Coast Camping Permits are currently available 90-days in advance. PERMITS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE through this website. Limited overnight parking is available at the trailhead in Hāʻena State Park. Overnight parking must be purchased at gohaena.com AFTER securing your camping permits.
How do you get a hiking permit in Hawaii?
Permits are being granted no earlier than 90 days before your journey. There is some parking available (with a separate parking permit) for Napali Coast State Wilderness Park. In order to get a permit, visit the Hawaii DLNR reservation system online for Napali Coast State Wilderness Park.
Can you hike the Kalalau Trail without a permit?
The first 2-miles of the Kalalau Trail from Ke’e Beach to Hanakāpīʻai Beach is open for day-use without a permit. Visitors must have advanced reservations to enter Hā’ena State Park.
Can you hike the Kalalau Trail in one day?
If no permits are available, you can still enjoy the Kalalau Trail for a day hike (day-use reservations required). You can hike to Hanakāpīʻai beach (4-Mile round trip) or to Hanakāpīʻai Falls and back (8-Mile round trip). Permits are available up to 90 days out. Get your permits early to ensure a permit is available.
Is the Kalalau Trail worth it?
It isn’t as scenic as the rest of the trail, so for this reason I’d say that it’s not worth it just to hike to Hanakoa and back. If you don’t have time to hike the full Kalalau Trail, save it for another time and just do the day hike to Hanakapai’ai.

How long does it take to hike the Kalalau Trail?
On the left, near the end of the road, before you reach the beach, you’ll see the trailhead next to a large sign labeled ‘Kalalau Trail. ‘ To hike the entire trail and also spend time exploring Kalalau Beach and Valley takes 3-5 days. Most people are day hikers that don’t ever make it all the way out to Kalalau.
Can you day hike the Napali Coast?
Yes, you can do a good part of the famed Kalalau Trail in a single day. When I found out there was a guided day hike of the majestic natural wonder that is the Napali Coast, I was off to Kauai as soon as I could book a flight.

Where does the Kalalau Trail start?
The Na Pali Coast (Kalalau) Trail begins at the Ke’e beach parking lot in Ha’ena State Park, at the end of the road on Kauai’s North shore. The trail starts off on old paving stones which can be slippery when wet.
How do you get to Kalalau Lookout?
To get here, take Highway 50 west from Hanapepe toward Waimea. Turn right on Waimea Canyon Road just after mile marker #23. Kalalau Lookout is located near the end of the road at mile marker #18. Available facilities at the lookout point include restrooms and picnic tables.
How long does it take to hike first 2 miles of Kalalau Trail?
Need some good hiking shoes for this trail if you are going to the waterfall– be prepared to spend 5-6 hours hiking up and down and over rocks and boulders. You will also cross many water trails–some that are knee deep. The hike back to the waterfall is beautiful but hard–don’t try this hike in your flip flops!
Can I hike Kalalau Trail?
There are a few ways to tackle the Kalalau Trail. You can hike 11 miles to Kalalau Beach in one push. Or you can take your time, explore the valleys, visit some waterfalls, and spend the first night at the designated “Six-Mile Campground.” We chose the latter.
What time do Kalalau Trail permits open?
