Some species of barracuda migrate between southern California and Baja California. In the late spring and early summer they move north in an organized fashion from Baja California into southern California. In the autumn their migration south to Baja is less dependable. Some barracuda stay put.
Do Barracudas come close to shore?
Most species of barracuda live in near-shore habitats, such as seagrass beds, mangroves, and coral reefs. They’re primarily marine fish, although a few varieties can tolerate brackish water at times.
What do you do when you see a barracuda?
If you notice you’re sharing the sea with a barracuda, don’t panic. They’re curious, not vicious. Don’t wear shiny jewelry when you snorkel, and avoid handing fish just before jumping into the sea.
