What Does an Otologist Do

Otologists, also known as neurotologists, are ENT doctors who sub-specialize in complex problems of the inner ear, auditory nerve and base of the skull. They’ve received additional training to specialize in this area.

What do otologist treat?

Otology is the study, diagnosis and treatment of ear disorders and diseases. Patients may be referred to an otologist by their primary care doctor if they are experiencing problems with the ear, hearing loss or balance related disorders. Some otologists can perform surgery on the ears.

What is the difference between an otologist and an ENT?

An otologist differs from an ENT doctor in that they deal specifically with diseases that affect the anatomical structure of the ear, such as hearing loss from anatomical issues. They know what to do for ear inflammation, eardrums that have been perforated, dizziness, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
