Pumping pain can happen for a host of reasons: dry skin, the collagen fibers in the nipples needing to stretch, flanges that are too big or too small, the suction on the pump. If you're continuously in pain when you pump, something's not right.
Is breast pumping supposed to be painful?
Just like with breastfeeding, pumping your breasts should most certainly not be painful or uncomfortable. While some discomfort and pain may happen, the occurrence of either could be an indicator that something needs to be adjusted or addressed.
How do I know if my flange is too small?
If your breast pump flange is too small you may experience:
- Rubbing as the nipple is pulled against the sides of the breast pump tunnel.
- Pinching and squeezing of the nipple.
- Your nipple or areola becomes white or discolored.
- Low breast milk production.
- Painful milk extraction.
