The IABP, invented in 1967, has been used in roughly three million patients since the 1980s when it went into general use. Born in New York City on October 4, 1918, Kantrowitz graduated from New York University with a degree in mathematics.
When was the intra aortic balloon pump invented?
Following many anecdotal attempts, Moulopoulos and associates developed the intra-aortic balloon pump in the late 1950s (Trost and Hillis, 2006). It was introduced clinically in the early 1960s by Kantrowitz. When inserted in the thoracic aorta, such a device can increase the patient's cardiac output by more than 25%.
