They are evergreen shrubs with a low rounded shape that reach 1 meter in height. The stems are furrowed by rows of small, shiny leaves that look like Buxus leaves. The small but very showy flowers appear in groups at the ends of the branches and are pink. They bloom from spring to summer.
Where does Pimelea grow?
Very much a coastal plant, Pimelea ferruginea grows in sand dunes and rocky headlands from Port Denison, (just south of Geraldton) in the north, to Israelite Bay, (east of Esperance) on the south coast.
How do you care for Pimelea?
It likes a well drained soil, and a sunny position to be at its best. Feed with a good native fertiliser in spring, watering in well afterwards to avoid leaf or root burn. It is naturally a compact growing plant, and pruning off the old flowers once they are finished will enhance the dense habit.
