The first DTMF tone producing telephone was introduced in November of 1963 for the Bell System. More user friendly than the rotation of a rotary dial, touch tone phones quickly supplanted the rotary phone. Dialing speed increased, stress on the network decreased, and users flocked to the new technology.
Why was DTMF invented?
The system has also proved reliability. DTMF came to the US in the 1940s as a streamline of a system for telephony that then was built on the impulse system, with a rotary dial. Many that grew up in the 1970s or earlier are used to phones with rotary dials which were much more ineffective to call with.
When did touch tone dialing start?
TOMORROW, America celebrates the 25th anniversary of a ubiquitous icon, the Touch-Tone telephone. Introduced to the nation on Nov. 18, 1963, the Touch-Tone was perfect for a country obsessed with push-buttons (though the push-button washing machine and push-button automatic transmission have gone the way of Fizzies).
