Dangerous complications arise when pets or outdoor food sources attract bobcats into yards. For example, a bobcat will attack dogs and cats that are left outside. A constantly replenished supply of pet food also makes the pests feel comfortable in the backyard environment, increasing the chance of conflicts.
Do bobcats prey on dogs?
Bobcats kill and eat a variety of animal species, from tree squirrels to deer, but will occasionally prey on livestock, fowl and household companion animals, such as rabbits, cats and dogs. Bobcats have been known to enter chicken coops and kill all birds enclosed within, but eating only a few choice bits.
What to do if you see a bobcat with your dog?
Should you encounter a bobcat, you should keep as much distance between you and the animal as possible:
- Immediately protect children and pets.
- Back away from the bobcat slowly and deliberately.
- Avoid running away because that could trigger a pursuit response.
- If possible, spray the animal with water.
