He was one of three men responsible for the mechanisation of spinning: Hargreaves is credited with inventing the spinning jenny in 1764; Richard Arkwright patented the water frame in 1769; and Samuel Crompton combined the two, creating the spinning mule in 1779.

Who invented spinning wool?
In 1764 James Hargreaves invented the “Spinning Jenny,” which now automated spinning. At first glance, it resembles a spinning wheel with up to 100 spindles. But unlike the spinning wheel, the Spinning Jenny worked according the same principle as the manual drop spindle.

Invented in the 14th century to spin wool into yarn. The Great Wheel was also known as the Walking Wheel, as it was operated while standing.
