Dogs get coccidia from swallowing infected soil or substances containing dog feces. Removing dog feces from your yard and the dog's environment is the best protection. Your veterinarian can test, and treat if necessary, your dog for coccidia. Puppies should be tested regularly.
How did my puppy get coccidia?
Your dog most likely became infected with coccidia from swallowing oocysts (immature coccidia) that are found in dog feces and soil contaminated with feces. Infected dogs pass oocysts in the feces.
Can puppies get coccidia from their mom?
Babies nursing from an infected mother. Animals less than six months have no immunity to coccidia and can get the disease from other infected puppies.
