Why use breakaway cat collars? Breakaway collars feature a breakaway safety buckle that unsnaps or unclips when pulled with force. If your cat's collar is snagged on something that entangles them, your cat will not choke or have a neck injury because the collar will automatically break away from the neck.
Should cats wear breakaway collars?
Traditional collars should never be used on a pet if they are allowed to wander freely, or are not being supervised. Cats that are allowed to wander outside, or live outdoors should only have a breakaway collar, preferably with reflective material for additional protection at night.
Do cat collars have to be quick release?
Any collar you get for your cat needs to be a 'quick release' collar. This means if they get caught on a branch or even on their own paw, the plastic buckle will come apart so they're less likely to hurt themselves. Check that the quick release does what it says and could easily come apart without you cat struggling.
