Nichols was driving in his car and was asked by police officers to stop because of his rash driving. Tyre initially thought some gang members were after him, and they were pretending to be police.
He attempted to run away while the police started chasing him. As soon as he was caught, the five police officers started beating him.
In an attempt to cough him, they broke his neck. Nichols’ was escorted to the hospital, and after three days spent in the hospital, he died on Jan 10.
The Memphis Police Department took immediate action on the case and terminated all the police officers that were involved. The involved officers’ names were Justin Smith, Desmond Mills, Emmitt Martin, Tadarrius Bean, and Demetrius Haley.
Attorney Benjamin Crump said the video was very violent and disturbing on every level. Nichols’ mother, Ravaughn Wells, was utterly devastated after discovering what happened to her son.
The police and city officials claimed that they consulted with the victim’s family and showed them the complete footage of what happened.
