Sami Manirath’s untimely death has cast a somber shadow over the tight-knit community of Fort Kent. At 52 years old, she met a tragic end in a fatal accident on a Tuesday afternoon when her vehicle careened into the Fish River, as reported by the Fort Kent Police Department.
Sami Manirath was a familiar face in the community, known as the proprietor of Sami’s Cuisine and Cocktails, a restaurant she established at the end of 2022. Her journey to Fort Kent was a unique one, having lived in Laos until the age of 8 before relocating to Buffalo, New York, and finally settling in Fort Kent in 2022.
The incident unfolded at 4:45 PM, with law enforcement swiftly responding to the scene. According to Fort Kent Police Chief Michael DeLena, the accident originated from East Main Street. Manirath’s white 2023 GMC Acadia veered off the road, entering the parking lot of an apartment complex. From there, it catapulted off a rock ledge, collided with the embankment, and somersaulted multiple times before landing in the Fish River.
The submerged vehicle posed a challenge to the Fort Kent Fire and Rescue Team, who worked diligently to extract the driver. Rushed to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center and later airlifted to Bangor, Manirath was in critical condition. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries at the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.
The emergency response was a collaborative effort, with Fort Kent Police and Fire Departments receiving support from Ambulance Service Inc., Maine Warden Service, Maine State Police, and the United States Border Patrol. The Presque Isle Police Department and the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office also played pivotal roles in reconstructing the accident scene.
Chief DeLena emphasized that a thorough investigation into the incident is underway. The circumstances leading to the crash, starting from East Main Street, are being meticulously examined to shed light on the unfortunate event that claimed Sami Manirath’s life.
