In 1972 manager Aaron Russo declared himself to be the best thing that could ever happen to Bette Midler.  He was true to his word and helped her become the superstar we know today.  However, he was also obsessed with Midler, and after a 7 year tumultuous relationship, he finally proposed in 1979.  When he produced a huge diamond ring she declared 'I don't need you any more.  I am big enough to pay my own bills!'
