1. How to create an account at Geneanet?
It’s easy to create a free account at Geneanet, the #1 genealogy site in France and Europe’s biggest community of genealogists! No payment or bankcard information is required, and you may use a free account for as long as you wish.
On the Geneanet homepage, click on the red “Sign In” button to the upper right. Next, enter your name and e-mail, then enter a username (screen name) and password. Be aware that a username cannot be changed for an account, so be sure to choose a name you like! Note that a username will be in all lowercase letters and cannot contain a space. For security reasons, avoid a username with personal information.
Take a moment to read our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click on the red “Create account” button.
Getting the most out of Geneanet
We encourage you to upload a GEDCOM file if you already have a family tree elsewhere (online or on your computer), as you will get more out of Geneanet with a tree. With a free account, you may build a tree of unlimited size and you get 1 Gb of storage for photos and documents for your tree. Be aware that trees at Geneanet are public by default, while living persons are masked; for more information, read our page “Understanding and configuring privacy settings at Geneanet”.

2. How to login to Geneanet?
To connect to Geneanet, click on “Sign In“ at the upper right after creating your account. Next, enter your username (or your e-mail) and your password.
If you check the tickbox for “Keep me logged in”, a cookie (a small computer file storing information about a site) will remember you so you don’t have to log in every time. Note that a cookie is specific to a browser, so if you switch browsers or devices, you will need to login again. Note also that some browsers, operating systems, and password manager applications you may have on your computer or device will remember a password for you as an option. These tools are specific to your computer and are not the same as Geneanet’s cookie system.
