Khalil : Arabic: from a personal name based on Arabic khalīl ‘friend’. Khalīlullāh ‘friend of God’ is an honorific title given to the prophet Ibrahim (which corresponds to the Biblical Abraham; see Ibrahim). See the Koran 4:125: ‘God/Allah took Ibrahim as his friend.’ Bearers of this surname are both Muslims and Christians. Compare Kalil.
