His mother, Sheree, is a teacher, while his father, Donald, works for a recycling company.

After high school, he attended Northeastern University in Boston studying to be a lawyer; however, after doing a summer internship at a law firm, he realized he did not like working with lawyers. In his second-year university, he switched to acting. During his spring break, he went to visit a friend in Los Angeles and never returned to college.

Cotrona made his acting career debut with a role Donovan Alvarez in the popular TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. That same year, he appeared in Skin followed by Hollywood Division.

In 2005, he landed a role in the movie Venom as Sean. Also, he starred in the 2006 Slamdance Film Festival film Love is the Drug.

From 2014-16, he played Seth Gecko in the series, From Dusk till Dawn, being part of the main cast.
