Who is your top overall play (when considering price, matchup, roster construction, etc.) on the board and why?
Moneyball16: Connor McDavid – At home vs. Ottawa is a strong matchup, with them having bad goaltending and allowing lots of power-play goals. On top of that, the top line for Edmonton has been the best line in hockey, and McDavid remains the NHL’s best player.
TastefulTides: Connor McDavid – There are plenty of options on this loaded slate, but I am going to continue to attack this terrible Senators’ penalty kill with one of the best power plays in the NHL. Edmonton playing at home is already a huge advantage at 5v5, and then you add in the special teams advantage, and I think Ottawa is going to be in for a tough night.
Joda: Connor McDavid – The Hart race is back on, as McDavid has been electric since a nagging injury slowed him down for weeks. The Senators’ goaltending is nonexistant, and they take too many penalties for their own good. A multi-point night is almost automatic for McDavid at this point, and it would not be a shocker to see another ceiling performance.
Who is your favorite contrarian play (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
Moneyball16: Erik Karlsson – On purely a points level, he has seen his production drop this season, but he’s still assisting on scoring chances at a very high level, and the power play for Pittsburgh is bound to improve. He hasn’t been getting much ownership even when his teammates are, and he is cheap with a good matchup tonight.
TastefulTides: Artemi Panarin – There are so many great spots for a lot of different skaters and teams tonight, and not all of them can carry ownership on a 10-game slate. Panarin has been a model of consistency with a ceiling to go along with it. The Rangers have the best power play in all of hockey and get to face off against the second-worst penalty kill in the league. This is a smash spot for the Rangers power play and top-6 players.
Joda: Evan Bouchard – Bouchard’s expensive price tag likely leaves him underowned compared to his teammates. He is a weapon on the power play, and his 64.36% x/GF share at 5-on-5 is the best of any forward or defenseman in the NHL.
