Life and Death of Tommy Bolin- 6 Amazing Facts About Him

When Tommy Bolin died in 1976, many believed what was the brightest star of Colorado at the time had died. He was a great guitarist and songwriter who maintained an excellent solo career while also collaborating with other great stars including Zephyr, James Gang, and Billy Cobham. He was briefly a member of Deep Purple.

Many years after his death, Bolin has still remained significant to the music scene in the United States and was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall Of Fame. While there are many things that are quite known about him, here are things you probably don’t know yet.

Tommy Bolin- His Life

It was as Thomas Richard Bolin that the singer was born on August 1, 1951, in Sioux City, Iowa, the United States to Richard and Barbara. Bolin was raised alongside two brothers, Johnnie and Rick. He also had another brother, Bobby, who unfortunately did not survive after birth.

Like most other famous music stars, Tommy maintained an interest in music since he was a young child and was influenced by people such as Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley.

He was still a child when he first appeared on TV in the full costume of Elvis. His performance on the local TV program, Kids Corner was interesting enough to have him back after 3 days after viewers fell in love with him and wanted more of the youngster.

By the time he was 15, he had already been with different bands such as The Velairs, Denny & The Triumphs, and Patch Of Blue. However, he felt he was not moving forward and was tired of that so he decided he was leaving home for Colorado, a move that was supported by his parents.

It was after the move that he joined the band Ethereal Zephyr as its lead guitarist. He would go on in 1972 to form the band Energy which did not release an album in his lifetime because there was no available contract. After joining other bands, he later decided to have a solo career.

In 1975, Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Blue and in his place, Tommy was brought in. Unfortunately, he was not going to remain a member for a long time.

How Did Bolin Die?

On December 4, 1976, the world woke up to the shocking announcement that Tommy was dead at the age of 25. His death was said to be as a result of heroin overdose, something that was not seen as suicide.

Just some hours before his unfortunate death, the Hall of Famer was told by The Miami News Jon Marlowe to take care of himself. To that, he replied that he had always taken care of himself and he was going to live long so Jon should not worry about him.

In addition to Heroin, other things he overdosed on that led to his death included alcohol and cocaine.

He is buried in Sioux City, Iowa in Calvary Cemetery.
