Rachel Michelle Charlesworth was born on June 7, 1970, in New Jersey, United States. She is one of the three children of  James Hamilton Charlesworth and Jerrie Charlesworth. Her father was a religious educator and minister, who Ordained to ministry United Methodist Church. Similarly, her mother was an artist, who served as the Art Director of the Morehead Planetarium at UNC-Chapel Hill. She has a sister named Eve Charlesworth and a brother named James Charlesworth.

Charlesworth attended Princeton High School in Princeton, New Jersey. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy from Duke University in 1992. Furthermore, she studied economics at the University of Freiburg on a full scholarship from the German government.

Michelle began her career from WMGM radio network in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She then moved to the ABC-affiliated WCTI-TV in New Bern, North Carolina. She then worked at WNCN Channel 17 in Raleigh as a reporter and anchor for two years.
