Sandra Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in the town of Arlington, Virginia. She is the daughter of Helga Mathilde, a German opera singer and voice teacher, and John Wilson Bullock, a Birmingham, Alabama-based employee of the Army and part-time voice coach.

Her father, who was in charge of the Army’s Military Postal Service in Europe, met her mother in Nuremberg, and they later married in Germany.

Bullock was raised in Germany, as well as Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, for 12 years and grew up speaking German. She attended a Waldorf school in Nuremberg.

Sandra went to Washington-Lee High School, where she became a cheerleader and performed in school plays. She attended East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, North Carolina, after graduating in 1982 and received a BFA in Drama in 1987.
