Born Patrick Lavon Mahomes II on September 17, 1995, in Tyler, Texas, Patrick Mahomes is an American professional football player. His father is Pat Mahomes, a former MLB pitcher for the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, and the Chicago Cubs. His mother, Randi, is a homemaker who made sure Patrick concentrated on his school work in addition to sports.
There is little doubt that Patrick’s love of sports evolved from the example of his father, Pat Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes played football, baseball, and basketball in high school. In his senior year, Mahomes had 4,619 passing yards, 948 rushing yards, 50 passing touchdowns, and 15 rushing touchdowns as a senior. Patrick Mahomes also threw a no-hitter for his high school baseball team as a senior.
While many MLB teams were looking at Patrick as a top prospect, he chose to commit to Texas Tech University. The Detroit Tigers drafted Patrick in the 37th round.
Patrick Mahomes was the backup quarterback his freshman year. He also appeared on the Texas Tech University baseball team roster as a relief pitcher. But when he became starting quarterback his sophomore year, he only played three games for the baseball team and, in his junior year, announced he was leaving the baseball team to pursue football full time.
During his junior year, Mahomes set several NCAA records. He set the NCAA records for single-game yards passing (734) and single-game yards total offense (819) and led his division in many categories. He decided to forgo his senior year at Texas Tech University to make himself eligible for the NFL draft.
Patrick Mahomes NFL Career
The Chiefs chose Mahomes as a first-round player by selecting him as its 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.
Patrick Mahomes didn’t start a game in his rookie year until December 27, 2017. The Chiefs let their starting quarterback, Alex Smith, take a break to give Mahomes some playing time as the team was already assured of a spot in the NFL playoffs.
Mahomes completed 22 of 35 passes and became the starting quarterback for the Chiefs the following season. A month later, the team went all-in with Mahomes as the Chiefs starting QB when it traded Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins.
Mahomes did not disappoint, setting an NFL record for most touchdown passes in a quarterback’s first three career games. The Chiefs lost the AFC Championship game to the Patriots that season, but Mahomes racked up honors, including the 2019 Best NFL Player ESPY Award, NFL MVP, and ranked fourth in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2019.
During the 2019 season, Mahomes earned a Super Bowl ring as he led the Kansas City Chiefs to the Super Bowl, where they defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes made NFL history as the youngest quarterback to earn the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award.
Mahomes made another Super Bowl appearance with the Chiefs again in 2020, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated them. Mahomes wasn’t voted both the league MVP and Super Bowl MVP in 2020. The league MVP honor went to Aaron Rodgers.
How much is Aaron Rodgers worth? His net worth is about $120 million. But, Mahomes is only 26 years old and, if he stays injury-free, will have many more years in the NFL, while Rodgers is 38 years old and close to retirement age.
What’s Next for Patrick Mahomes?
The decision by the Chiefs to offer Mahomes an almost half-billion dollar monster deal is one of the easiest no-brainer moves in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs have made Patrick Mahomes a very wealthy athlete with NFL contract money, but Mahomes is planning on investing some of the money back in the Kansas City community.
He is in ownership groups for both the Kansas City Royals and the MLS team, the Sporting Kansas City. While he wants to play professional football as long as possible, he has realistic expectations for a life in sports after the NFL.
