Can you hurt a cat by slapping it?

It is important that you never physically hurt your cat. This includes spanking, hitting, kicking, or hurting your cat intentionally. Attempting to teach a cat a lesson through physical means does not work and can actually lead to more disruptive, even aggressive, behavior.

Why do cats like being patted?

Petting from humans mimics the sensation of being groomed and can provide the same pleasurable experience. Bunting (nuzzling and rubbing on you) is one way cats show love to you. Petting is a way to return that love. Cats also enjoy petting because it feels really good to them.
