Fleetwood Mac Should Have Been Worth Billions, So What Happened?

Ever since Fleetwood Mac's debut in the late 1960s, the group has been front and center in the music world. Decades after they topped the charts, dedicated fans (and new ones) are still interested in the group's music.

One big question fans have is regarding the band's earnings—from why they never made billions to who, exactly, is reaping the financial benefit from Fleetwood Mac's continued time in the spotlight.

Fleetwood Mac Outsold The Beatles But Never Made Billions

Long-time fans of Fleetwood Mac will recall that the band's formal debut happened in 1967. Only two years later, they were headlining concerts in Europe and taking over the music industry.

The group was even said to have outsold The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, though it's unclear whether that's only one specific year (1969) or subsequent years as well. It's also not clear whether the "outselling" was only in album sales (for a particular album or songs in one year) or ticket sales, or a combination of various sales.

Many have speculated that Fleetwood Mac did well with certain songs or albums, but that they still couldn't keep pace with a global group like the Beatles, who probably sold more consistently simply because they were so well-known.

Regardless, their popularity was never up for debate, as Fleetwood Mac has clung to its claim to fame for decades now. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean it's got billions in the bank.

What is clear is that ultimately, Fleetwood Mac didn't pocket as much cash as The Beatles or The Stones did. Or, if they did, it didn't last.

Fleetwood Mac Is Worth Over $500 Million

Fleetwood Mac as a group, since it's all but disbanded (and has unfortunately lost members over the years), doesn't technically have a net worth. However, combined, the various former group members have a net worth of around $551 million dollars. The group members' net worths range from $1.1M (Bob Welch) to $150M (Lindsey Buckingham, despite his being fired from the band ages ago).

Compared to the Beatles, including the net worth of the band's late members, the totals are rather low; the Beatles are worth nearly three billion dollars combined. The Rolling Stones are said to be worth around $1.45 billion, for additional reference.

So given how beloved Fleetwood Mac has been, and for so long, there's something of a disconnect between the band's earnings and those of its contemporaries. It turns out that Fleetwood Mac may have had lower earnings than other groups, but also some high expenditures.
