Despite a somewhat problematic past, Sarah Shahi has become one of Hollywood's 'It Girls' following the success of Netflix's mega-hit Sex/Life. Without a doubt, 2023's second season of the series not only increased her net worth but also shed more light on her love life.
As many fans know, Shahi is actually involved with her on-screen love interest, Adam Demos. While Demos has also become a far larger star due to his role as Brad and that rather talked-about intimate scene in the first season, fans have noticed that his role greatly diminished in the second installment. What Happened To Brad In Sex/Life?
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Demos addressed what happened to his character Brad in the second season of Sex/Life. Following the twist of Sarah Shahi's Billie running away from her marriage to be with Brad at the end of the first season, the second season finds both Billie and Brad in a very different situation. Mainly, apart.
Come season 2, Brad is in a full-on relationship with Wallis Day's Gigi, and is focused on building a life with her and their unborn son. Sure, he's still in love with Billie, but his life is on a very different path. Therefore, the show spends far more time with Shahi's Billie.
That is, until the very end of the second season when the two split off from their other relationships and decided to get married to each other. And, of course, Billie is also pregnant with his son.
When asked by The Hollywood Reporter as to why Brad and Billie didn't stay together at the end of the first season, Adam Demos said the following:
"Brad really did work through all of his past issues, and he wanted to settle down. He wanted to start a life and put that wild side behind him. And he said that to Billie, but they’ve always had a problem with timing."
Demos continued by saying, "So, I think when he laid it all out on the line and proposed to her, and she said, 'No,' he just had to move on, because you can’t just sit around and wait forever. So, I understood it. It was a shock that he was going to have a baby, for sure, but I understood why he moved on. You really do have to move on with your life at some point, even though that’s tough for his heart to do because he loves her more than anything."
Demos went on to address his character's business interests in the second season and how they factored into Brad's relationship with Billie.
"I think it meant losing [Brad's] company shined a light on a lot of things in his life, like what was really important to him, what kind of people he had around him and why," Demos said to The Hollywood Reporter.
"And I think it draws back to his love for Billie, that she always got him outside of all of that. She understood him. She understood the scared little boy inside of him. She didn’t care about the company. She cared about him. And, I think, when he was successful, he couldn’t see who was around him for the success or for him," he continued to explain. "So that’s what I think is beautiful, too. She just loved him for him. So that’s why he’s so sure of committing to her. She’s the only one. Ups and downs, she’ll always be there."
Why Did Adam Demos Have A Smaller Role In Sex/Life Season 2?
Despite Adam Demos being one of the breakout stars of Sex/Life, as well as his character (Brad) being an integral part of the first season, he role was greatly diminished come the second season.
This has led many fans online to wonder if there was something that went on behind the scenes that may have contributed to the decreased size of his role. Or, if his real-life relationship with his on-screen co-star had something to do with it.
During his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Demos addressed the controversy. Although, he did his best to foist the answer over to the show's creators...
"That’s more of a creator’s and writer’s question to answer, I think, just because those are the genius minds that come up with this stuff."
However, Demos added, "But I think, maybe, in order to allow the Billie and Majid storyline, for you to buy into it, maybe Brad can’t always be there as much. But yeah, I’m not too sure. It’s nice to be missed, if people do miss Brad. But I did understand that in order for these storylines to work, you have to allow them to take their own form and have a life of their own. When you’re reading the scripts and knowing that you come full circle and they end up together, it wasn’t too bad to go through."
Adam Demos told The Hollywood Reporter that he didn't question the creative decision to cut down his role in the second season.
"They sort of crafted season two and were like, 'This is how it’s gonna go.' I always say, a lot smarter people than me come up with these storylines and create shows; I certainly couldn’t do it."
"They were like, 'This is why it’s happening.' And it made sense in order to allow the audience to follow Billie’s journey with Majid and her new experiences; sometimes you can’t have Brad there all the time," Adam Demos said to The Hollywood Reporter.
"But you do have to sprinkle it in because they are each other’s true love in a sense. I think you have to allow each character’s own journey to have its own life for a while. I think that’s what they were trying to do."
