Context

This is gonna sound weird, so stick with us.

Felicity and Gemma, the main characters of A Great and Terrible Beauty, are at Pippa's funeral, and Felicity's worried that Gemma has been damaged by the shadow demon. Yep. Shadow demon.

See, she's unsure of exactly what happened when Gemma went back in the dream world to try to save Pippa and defeat the shadow. Felicity is concerned about what's going to happen to them—and if this encounter had any lasting effects.

So Gemma responds with these semi-reassuring words. We think she could use a little help in the motivational speaking department.

Okay, maybe not the whole magical powers in a dreamscape with evil shadow creatures and powerful runes…but the we're-all-damaged-goods part.

You might hear someone use this line to explain or console a particular instance of damage. The best thing about being broken is that we can all be broken together (although we'd also settle for superpowers).
