Early Life and Education
David Alan Grier was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1956. His mother was a teacher and his father was a psychiatrist and author. He attended Cass Tech high school and later earned a B.A. in Radio, Television and Film from the University of Michigan. Grier then went on to receive an MFA from the Yale School of Drama in 1981. As a child, Grier’s family marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the March on Poverty in Detroit.
