Professionally her mother is an actress and a model while her father was a businessman and a music producer. Anansa's father passed away on 3rd October 2012 after suffering from colon cancer.

Sims attended Buffalo State College from where she later graduated. She completed her MBA from Trinity College in Washington DC.

Before Anansa's modeling career, she worked as a financial analyst. However, she has not mentioned the firm or company that she used to work for.

Her mother Beverly Johnson was against Anansa getting into modeling and said,

I was against Anansa modeling because, throughout my career, I suffered from anorexia and bulimia – I was 5’9” and between 103 and 117 lbs. I never wanted her to go through that

Sims joined Wilhelmina's modeling agency's plus-size department. She is among the 8 models who posed for ' November 2009 edition.

She has also worked for many plus-size clothing companies. 

Anansa was also featured in on the Oprah Winfrey Network along with Beverly Johnson, Robert Dupont, David Patterson, and Brian Maillian.
