He was born on 4 May 1972 in Grand Saline, Texas to Connie and Donna Tomlin. He is an elder brother to Ryan and Cory. Tomlin learned guitar from Willie Nelson records and wrote his first worship song at the age of fourteen.

He attended Tyler Junior College as well as Texas A&M University. He was a worship leader in various church camps in the mid-1990s.
