He is from a musical family where his mother is a big-band singer in the Art Kassel's band, and his father was a pianist. He knows how to play the guitar; his career started in 1946. He is of American nationality and belongs to the white ethnicity.

Tommy started his professional career when he was only eight years old. His parents gifted him a guitar which he learned to play on his own. By the time, he reached eight, he already had a job performing twice weekly on a local radio station.
