Sam Howell is the current starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders franchise of the NFL. Born on September 16, 2000, the 23-year-old is now well into his second season as a professional football player. Howell entered the NFL as a fifth-round draftee in the 2022 NFL Draft even though he was expected to be selected much earlier.

After starting his rookie season as the Commander’s third-string quarterback, Howell got the chance to start and play in the last regular season game of the season in week 18 after the team was already eliminated from playoff contention.

Prior to entering the NFL, the North Carolina native put up pretty solid performances both in college and in high school. Attending Sun Valley High School in North Carolina, Howell passed for 13,415 yards while throwing 145 touchdowns and added another 3,621 yards and 60 touchdowns on the ground.

He would continue his success at the University of North Carolina where his three years yielded 10,283 passing yards to go along with 92 passing touchdowns while adding a little over 1,000 rushing yards and a further 17 touchdowns. In 2019, he was named the ACC Rookie of the Year.
