Not so long ago, news of the Greenwood rape case involving a well-known professional football player, Mason Greenwood, shocked the world. The claims against the then-18-year-old Manchester United striker, regarded as a rising star in the game, puzzled many in the United Kingdom. What is Greenwood rape?
On January 30, 2022, Mason Greenwood, a Manchester United player, was accused of raping a woman in a hotel in Manchester. She also released an audio tape in which the voice of a woman was heard saying “I don’t want to have sex”. Following the publication of the allegations, Greenwood was arrested by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) on January 30, 2022. He was subsequently suspended from the first team and the club by Manchester United that same day. He was then released on bail on February 2, 2022.
On October 15, 2022, Greenwood was arrested again for allegedly breaching his bail conditions. He was subsequently charged by the police with attempted rape for an alleged incident on 22 October 2021. He was also charged with two other offences: alleged assault leading to bodily harm for an alleged incident in December 2021, and allegedly engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour regarding an incident in November 2018.
He was initially remanded in custody on October 17, 2022, but he was granted bail with strict conditions on 19 October after a private hearing in court.
The Greenwood rape case sparked an international debate about the power dynamics between professional athletes and their fans and the role of the media in covering such cases.
