The Origin Story
Die Antwoord is an alternative hip-hop band comprised of Anri “Yolandi Visser” du Toit and Watkin Tudor “Ninja” Jones.
The band was initially formed in 2008 as a musical representation of the South African counterculture movement, known as zef.
This movement rose to prominence as a direct response to the end of the apartheid political governing system in South Africa. Zef is a subculture that has been described as modern and trashy.
The band members settled on the name, “Die Antwoord,” an Afrikaans term that translates to “The Answer.”
Following the band’s formation, the due immediately began to work on their debut album, “$O$. The album was originally circulated only on the internet and their website.

Two of the more notable songs from the record are “Wat Pomp?” and “Enter the Ninja.”
Following the successful release of a few songs, the band was signed by Interscope Records, and the album was re-released in physical format but with a different track listing.
Surprisingly, the band became an overnight sensation in the global rave scene and was invited to play a live concert at the 2010 Coachella Music Festival.
Following their album tour and many other live performances, the duo worked on an extended play (EP) in the studio.
“5” was released on July 27, 2010, via Cherrytree Records.
It included a combination of previous tracks and new tracks. It was a spinoff to their previous album and a circulation of their hit single “Enter the Ninja.”
Only three months later, on October 12, 2010, they released a second 5-track EP titled “Ekstra” via Interscope Records.
