Early Life
Glenn Tipton was born on October 25, 1947, in Blackheath, England. He grew up with his brother, Gary, and attended Olive Hill Primary School. Tipton showed an early interest in music and was taught to play the piano by his mother. His brother played the guitar, which influenced Tipton’s own musical pursuits. At the age of 19, he learned how to play the guitar, starting with a Hofner acoustic guitar and later transitioning to a Rickenbacker and Fender Stratocaster.
Career: Joining Judas Priest
Tipton’s first band was Shave ‘Em Dry, which later evolved into Merlin and then The Flying Hat Band. However, due to management issues, the band eventually disbanded. In May 1974, Tipton joined the already formed heavy metal band Judas Priest during the recording of their debut studio album, “Rocka Rolla.” He quickly added guitar parts that contributed to the album’s sound.
As Judas Priest continued to release music, Tipton’s role within the band expanded. He not only contributed guitar parts but also writing, such as in songs like “Prelude,” “Epitaph,” and “The Ripper.” Tipton also played keyboard on some of the early albums, and he brought a more metal sound to the band after their initial blues rock and psychedelic-influenced album.
Judas Priest achieved commercial success with their album “British Steel” in 1980, which combined their heavy metal sound with pop-style song structures. Tipton’s guitar playing was prominently featured in the hits “United” and “Breaking the Law.” The band continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s with Tipton’s contributions.
In 1992, Rob Halford, the band’s lead vocalist, left Judas Priest, and the band went on hiatus. During this time, Tipton focused on a solo project. He released his first solo album, “Baptizm of Fire,” in 1997. The band later reunited with Halford in 2003, and Tipton continued to be a member, contributing to new music and occasionally appearing onstage with the band despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2018.
