Jay Kay, born Jason Luis Cheetham on December 30, 1969, in Stretford, Lancashire, England, had an unconventional upbringing. Raised by his mother, Karen Kay, a former cabaret singer and TV personality, and his biological father, Luis Saraiva, a former guitarist, Jay Kay faced early tragedy with the loss of his identical twin brother, David.
In his teenage years, Kay ran away from home and turned to a life of petty crime to survive. However, a false arrest and a near-death experience led him to reevaluate his choices. Kay decided to pursue a career in music and began working as a breakdancer. Before forming Jamiroquai, he failed an audition to become a singer for The Brand New Heavies.
Jay Kay formed Jamiroquai in 1992 with several core members and guest appearances. Their debut single, “When You Gonna Learn,” garnered significant attention and secured the band a one million USD record deal with Sony Music Entertainment. They went on to record their first album, “Emergency on Planet Earth,” which marked the beginning of their success.
Jamiroquai’s third album, “Travelling Without Moving,” propelled them to international fame with the iconic music video for “Virtual Insanity” earning several awards. The band’s subsequent albums, including “Synkronized,” “A Funk Odyssey,” “Dynamite,” “Rock Dust Light Star,” and “Automaton,” further solidified their popularity.
Although Jamiroquai achieved massive success in the UK and sold over 26 million albums worldwide, they struggled to gain a devoted audience in the US. Their impact on the music industry, however, cannot be denied, particularly with their Guinness World Record for the best-selling funk album in history and a Grammy Award for “Virtual Insanity.”
Throughout his life, Jay Kay has encountered both triumphs and challenges. He dated Denise van Outen from 1998 to 2001 and has two daughters, Tallulah and Carla, with his partner Maria. In 2017, he confirmed their marriage while receiving the Broadcast Music, Inc President’s Award at the BMI London Awards.
Kay has openly discussed his past cocaine addiction, which he overcame in 2003. He has also faced legal issues, including being charged with assaulting a paparazzi photographer in 2001. However, the charges were later dropped. In 2002, he was reportedly headbutted by a member of the paparazzi but declined to press charges.
In 2017, Jay Kay suffered a severe spinal injury that required surgery and resulted in the cancellation of two shows during the Jamiroquai Automaton tour.
