Early Life
Roger Waters was born on September 6, 1943, in Great Brookham, Surrey, England. His father died in World War II when he was just five months old, and he was raised by his mother and older brother. During his secondary school years, Waters was actively involved in various sports teams. He initially planned to pursue a career as an architect and enrolled at Regent Street Polytechnic, where he met future Pink Floyd members Nick Mason and Richard Wright. By 1963, they were regularly playing music together.
Career
Roger Waters switched to the bass guitar when Bob Klose and Syd Barrett joined the band in 1963, and the band eventually became known as Pink Floyd in 1966. Waters took the lead in their creative process after Barrett’s departure and became known for his songwriting contributions. He wrote most of the lyrics for Pink Floyd’s next five albums, including the highly successful “Dark Side of the Moon” in 1973. The album sold over 40 million copies and is considered one of the best-selling albums of all time.
“The Wall,” released in 1979, was another monumental album largely based on Waters’ life. It sold over 23 million copies in the US alone and became the third-best-selling album in America. Waters began taking even more creative control of the band, which led to his departure in 1985. He then embarked on a successful solo career.
Over the years, Waters continued to tour, often playing Pink Floyd songs. In 2005, he had a reunion with Pink Floyd for a performance in London’s Hyde Park. In 2017, he released his first solo album in almost 25 years, titled “Is This the Life We Really Want?”
