Early Life
John Popper was born on March 29, 1967, in Chardon, Ohio. He grew up in Stamford, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. During his high school years in Stamford and Princeton, New Jersey, he had musical aspirations and took piano, cello, and guitar lessons. However, he did not connect with any of these instruments. It wasn’t until he performed as The Blues Brothers with a friend that he discovered his love for musical performance.
After high school, Popper moved to New York City and enrolled in The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. However, he decided to dedicate himself entirely to Blues Traveler after the band signed a record contract in 1990.
Career
John Popper’s musical journey took off when he started playing the harmonica. This instrument resonated with him like no other, and he soon became widely regarded as a harmonica virtuoso. Popper formed several garage bands in Princeton, New Jersey, one of which eventually evolved into Blues Traveler in 1987.
As the songwriter and composer for Blues Traveler, Popper played a pivotal role in the band’s success. They released their self-titled debut album in 1990, but it was their fourth studio release, titled “four,” that propelled them to mainstream pop/rock radio success. The single “Run-Around” reached number eight on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 1996 awards show.
In addition to his work with Blues Traveler, John Popper has pursued solo projects and collaborated with other renowned artists such as Jonny Lang, Warren Haynes, the Spin Doctors, Dave Matthews Band, and Phish. He also created and ran the HORDE Festival, a side project that aimed to support independent musicians in gaining exposure.
Personal Life
John Popper has lived in various locations since Blues Traveler’s success, including rural Pennsylvania, New Orleans, and Washington state. In 1992, he was involved in a motorcycle accident that left him in a wheelchair for months. However, he persevered and continued touring despite the challenges.
In 1999, Popper faced a near-fatal heart attack, which was exacerbated by compulsive overeating after being diagnosed with diabetes a few years earlier. John and his former wife, Jordan, welcomed their first child, Eloise Ann, into the world on November 23, 2015. The couple divorced in 2018.
John Popper comes from a lineage of Hungarian heritage through his father. His father, who immigrated from Budapest in 1948, is related to David Popper, a renowned 19th-century European cellist. Both John’s mother and brother pursued careers in law.
