Early Life
Sheila Crump was born on January 25, 1949, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Her father worked for the Veterans Administration, while her mother was an accountant. She completed her education at Proviso East High School in Maywood, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Career
Black Entertainment Network (BET)
In 1979, Sheila and her then-husband Robert Johnson co-founded the Black Entertainment Network (BET), a cable network aimed primarily at the African-American audience. With initial funding of $15,000 and a loan of $500,000, BET started as a two-hour programming block on the Madison Square Garden Sports Network. Over time, BET expanded its programming and became a 24-hour cable network, reaching millions of homes.
The network played a significant role in showcasing Black culture and providing a platform for underrepresented voices. Despite some controversy regarding its programming choices, BET’s annual awards show and original programs became cultural touchstones.
In 2001, Sheila and Robert sold BET to Viacom for $3 billion, making them the first African-American billionaires in American history. Following their divorce in 2002, Sheila sold her remaining shares in the company.
Salamander Hospitality
In 2005, Sheila founded Salamander Hospitality, a hotel management company that specializes in high-end properties. Her most well-known asset is The Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia. The company owns and operates a portfolio of luxury resorts and golf clubs, including Reunion Resort in Reunion, Florida, The Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida, Hotel Bennett in Charleston, South Carolina, The Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia, and half of Montego Bay in Jamaica.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment
Through her holding company, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Sheila owns stakes in professional sports teams. She has ownership stakes in the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. Johnson is the Vice Chairman and Partner in Monumental, as well as the Managing Partner of the Washington Mystics. As the principal shareholder in three professional sports teams, she is the only African-American woman with this distinction.
Personal Life
Sheila Johnson was married to Robert Johnson from 1969 to 2002. They co-founded BET and experienced significant financial success before their divorce. The divorce settlement included a $400 million payment, making it one of the most expensive divorces in history.
In September 2005, Sheila married William T. Newman, a judge in Arlington County, Virginia. Interestingly, Newman was the judge who presided over her divorce from Robert Johnson three years earlier.
