During his teenage years, Wilpon attended Lafayette High School, where he played baseball alongside future Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax. After graduating, he enrolled at the University of Michigan, where he pitched for the baseball team before an injury ended his playing career. Wilpon graduated in 1958 and briefly worked in sales, selling calculators.
Career
Wilpon’s successful career began in 1972 when he co-founded Sterling Equities with his brother-in-law Saul Katz. The real estate development company has a diverse portfolio, including sports, media, and real estate holdings primarily in the New York area. Under Wilpon’s leadership, Sterling Equities made significant contributions to New York’s landscape, constructing properties such as Citi Field, the tower at 450 Lexington Avenue, and townhouses in Tarrytown, Westchester County.
In addition to his real estate ventures, Wilpon became increasingly involved with the New York Mets. He initially purchased a one-percent stake in the team in 1980 and gradually increased his ownership over the years. By 2002, Wilpon became the sole owner of the Mets after purchasing the remaining half from Doubleday & Co.
Wilpon held various executive positions within the Mets organization, including president from 1980 to 2002, CEO from 1980 to 2020, and chairman of the board from 2002 to 2020. However, his tenure as the Mets’ owner was not without challenges.
