Coco Chanel, originally named Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, was born on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. Her parents, Eugénie Jeanne Devolle Chanel and Albert Chanel, had modest backgrounds. Her mother worked as a laundrywoman, while her father sold clothing and undergarments as an itinerant street vendor.
After the death of her mother when Chanel was 11 years old, her father sent her and her sister to an orphanage run by the convent of Aubazine. Chanel grew up in various rundown lodgings, and her childhood was marked by poverty and instability.
Chanel began her career as a seamstress in Moulins and later started singing in a cabaret. It was during this time that she acquired the name Coco. She became the mistress of Etienne Balsan, a French ex-cavalry officer and textile heir, and lived with him for three years. After that, she had an affair with Captain Arthur Edward “Boy” Capel, one of Balsan’s friends, who financed her first shops.
Chanel started designing hats and became a licensed milliner in 1910. Her popularity grew when actress Gabrielle Dorziat wore one of her hats in a play. In 1913, she opened a boutique in Deauville, followed by another successful location in Biarritz. In 1921, she established a fashion boutique in a fashionable district of Paris, which became immensely successful.
In the 1920s, Chanel also began designing dance costumes for the Ballets Russes and developed a relationship with Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. She expanded her brand to include jewelry and fragrances, with Chanel No. 5 becoming one of the most iconic perfumes in history.
Coco Chanel had several romantic relationships throughout her life. She was involved with Arthur Capel, even after his marriage to an English aristocrat, until his untimely death in 1919. Chanel also had a romantic relationship with the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia and had a secretive affair with Igor Stravinsky.
Chanel had a close personal friendship with Misia Sert, a member of the bohemian elite in Paris, and both developed a habit of drug use together. Coco Chanel was a habitual drug user and injected herself with morphine daily until her death.
During World War II, Chanel lived in the Hotel Ritz in Paris, favored by German military staff, and had romantic liaisons with high-ranking German military members. She was accused of collaborating with the Nazis and working as a spy for the German intelligence agency. After the war, Chanel fled to Switzerland to avoid criminal charges.
