Early Life
Taylor Reuben Hicks was born on October 7, 1976, in Birmingham, Alabama. At the age of eight, his family relocated to Hoover. Hicks’ passion for soul and blues music can be traced back to his difficult childhood, as he found solace in these genres. He grew up with his stepmother Linda and his half-brother Shawn, who played a significant role in encouraging him to audition for “American Idol.”
Hicks discovered his musical talent during his teenage years, realizing he had perfect pitch – a rare ability to recreate musical tones without reference tones. He quickly developed his skills, teaching himself to play the electric guitar and the church organ. Despite his musical abilities, he also actively participated in sports during his high school years.
After graduating from high school, Hicks attended Auburn University while playing in a Widespread Panic cover band. He pursued a major in business and journalism, all the while playing varsity sports. Additionally, he joined a band called Passing Through during this time.
Career
Hicks embarked on his musical journey after completing university. He formed his own band and released an independent album titled “In Your Time” in 1997. However, it was in 2000, after moving to Nashville, that he made significant efforts to establish a professional music career. Despite working with renowned songwriters and singers to record a demo tape, Hicks struggled to secure a record label deal due to oversaturation in the market. As a result, he returned to Alabama to explore other opportunities.
During this period, Hicks performed at various live venues and gained popularity. His talent eventually led him to perform at the Talladega Superspeedway during NASCAR weekend in 2004. He released his second album, “Under the Radar,” which garnered attention. However, it was his appearance on “American Idol” in 2005 that solidified his recognition in the industry.
Although initially facing skepticism from Simon Cowell, Hicks impressed the show’s judges and reached the final three contestants. In 2006, he emerged as the winner of “American Idol,” becoming the oldest contestant to achieve this feat at the age of 29. This victory opened doors to numerous opportunities, including brand endorsements, marketing deals, and a record contract with 19 Recordings Limited/Arista Records.
Hicks released his self-titled debut album in 2006, which eventually achieved platinum status. Despite the album’s success, his sales were comparatively lower than other “American Idol” winners, and he was dropped by Arista. However, he quickly adapted by signing a distribution deal and releasing a compilation album called “Early Works.” Hicks continued to tour and starred in the Broadway musical “Grease” in 2008.
In 2009, Hicks released his second album, “The Distance,” further adding to his earnings. Despite album sales not reaching the expected heights, Hicks ranked among the top-earning “American Idol” stars due to his multi-faceted career. He opened a highly-reviewed restaurant in Birmingham and secured a residency at Bally’s casino in Las Vegas.
Although a period of inactivity followed his second album release, Hicks made a comeback in 2017 with the single “Six Strings and Diamond Rings.” In recent years, he has explored additional stage opportunities, such as starring in a production of “Shenandoah” in 2019.
