In 1981, James Ellroy published his first novel, “Brown’s Requiem,” drawing on his experience as a golf caddie. This was followed by books like “Clandestine” and “Killer on the Road.” Ellroy gained a cult following among crime fiction enthusiasts with these early works.
His most significant success came with the publication of the L.A. Quartet, consisting of “The Black Dahlia” (1987), “The Big Nowhere” (1988), “L.A. Confidential” (1990), and “White Jazz” (1992). These novels showcased a shift in Ellroy’s writing style, moving away from modernist noir fiction toward postmodern historiographic metafiction.
In 1995, Ellroy’s novel “American Tabloid” was named TIME magazine’s book of the year. He continued his success with the Underworld USA Trilogy, which included novels like “The Cold Six Thousand” and “Blood’s a Rover.” Ellroy has also published a memoir titled “My Dark Places,” diving into the story of his mother’s murder and the unique relationship they had.
His latest works include “Perfidia” (2014) and “This Storm” (2019), part of what Ellroy calls his Second L.A. Quartet. He has announced plans for two additional books in this quintet series.
James Ellroy was first married to Mary Doherty in 1988, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1991. He then married writer and critic Helen Knode in the same year. They eventually moved to Kansas City but divorced in 2006. However, they later reconciled and settled in Denver, Colorado, living in separate apartments in the same building.
Ellroy has struggled with alcohol and substance abuse throughout his life. He joined Alcoholics Anonymous in the 1970s, which helped him overcome his drinking problem.
