Early Life
Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. was born on October 8, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina. His mother, Helen Burns, was 16 years old at the time of his birth, and his father, Noah Louis Robinson, was her married neighbor. After his birth, his mother married Charles Henry Jackson, who later adopted Jesse. Consequently, Jackson’s surname was changed, but he maintained a relationship with Robinson and considers both men to be his fathers.
He grew up under Jim Crow segregation laws and attended Sterling High School, which was racially segregated. He chose to attend the University of Illinois on a football scholarship, but later transferred to North Carolina A&T, where he played as quarterback, was elected student body president, and actively engaged in civil rights protests against segregation. He graduated in 1964 with a B.S. in sociology and later received an honorary Master of Divinity Degree.
Career
Jackson became involved in civil rights activism early on, participating in sit-ins and working for Martin Luther King Jr. He was appointed the head of the Chicago branch of Operation Breadbasket and eventually founded Operation PUSH. Through PUSH, Jackson initiated various projects to support the Black community, including the PUSH-Excel program aimed at motivating teens and children to succeed.
In 1984 and 1988, Jackson launched Democratic presidential campaigns, positioning himself as a highly liberal candidate advocating for cutting the defense budget, creating a single-payer healthcare system, ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment, providing free community college, supporting the formation of a Palestinian state, and re-prioritizing the War on Drugs. Although he did not win the nomination, he served as the “shadow senator” for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 1997, lobbying for statehood. Jackson also actively supported presidential candidates like Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton.
