J Prince, born as James L. Smith on October 31, 1965, grew up in the Fifth Ward of Houston, Texas. His mother, Sharon Johnson, gave birth to him at the age of sixteen while already being a mother to Prince’s 1-year-old daughter, Zenia. The family resided in the Coke Apartments, also known as “the Bloody Nickel.” During his high school years at Kashmere High School, Prince played football and took on odd jobs like lawn mowing and welding truck work.
Tragically, Prince’s older sister Zenia was killed by a train while walking home from junior high school. Despite this loss, Prince graduated from Kasmere High and secured a job at the Colonial Savings and Loan’s Fault Department. After being laid off two years later, he ventured into restoring and selling bucket cars. Eventually, he established his company, Smith Auto Sales, and entered the exotic car business. His clientele primarily comprised wealthy athletes. By the age of 21, J Prince had saved over $100,000, enabling him to purchase a 30-acre ranch and a house for his mother before reaching the age of 23.
J Prince founded the Houston hip-hop record label, Rap-a-Lot, in 1986. Initially operating on the second floor of his auto shop, Prince’s main intention was to provide his younger brother with an outlet and prevent him from getting involved in street troubles. The label, also known as Smoke-a-Lot Records, gained prominence after the success of the Geto Boys, a rap group that put the South on the hip-hop map. Scarface and Willie D were among the notable rappers discovered by Prince. Rap-a-Lot’s success continued, with a focus on gangsta and southern rap.
In 1991–1994, Rap-a-Lot was distributed by the EMI labels Priority Records and Virgin Records. It then shifted to distribution under WEA’s Asylum Records during the 2000s. Throughout its existence, the record label maintained its influence and reputation, even receiving a reference from the Notorious B.I.G. in his song “Flava in Ya Ear (remix).” Additionally, J Prince’s son, Jas Prince, played a vital role in discovering rapper Drake and establishing a Rap-a-Lot management contract, eventually leading to Drake’s signing with Young Money in 2009.
J Prince published his memoir, “The Art & Science of Respect: A Memoir,” in 2018. Furthermore, in 2020, he launched the liquor and wine brand named “Loyalty.”
J Prince is the father of seven grown children and has been married to his wife since the late 1980s. His sons, J Prince Jr., Jas, and Jay “Baby Jay,” are also involved in the music and boxing industries. Outside of his professional endeavors, J Prince owns a ranch in Houston that yields an annual income of $200,000 from the Angus cattle he raises. Additionally, he owns an island off the coast of Belize known as Prince Island.
