Chris Robinson was born on December 20, 1966, in Marietta, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. His parents are Nancy Jane and Stanley Robinson. Growing up alongside his brother, Rich, Chris developed a passion for music at a young age. The brothers formed a band called Mr. Crowe’s Garden in the early 1980s, inspired by influential bands such as The Faces and The Rolling Stones. While pursuing their musical aspirations, Chris also prioritized his education and attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
In 1989, Chris and Rich Robinson changed the name of their band to The Black Crowes. They signed with renowned producer Rick Rubin and released their debut album, “Shake Your Money Maker,” which achieved significant success. The band toured alongside ZZ Top but were eventually fired due to Chris’ vocalized disapproval of corporate sponsorship. However, The Black Crowes were named Best New American Band by Rolling Stone in 1990.
Over the following years, the band experienced various lineup changes, with the Robinson brothers being the only consistent members. They released a total of eight studio albums, with their first two being the most commercially successful. Despite a hiatus from 2002 to 2005, The Black Crowes continued to attract a loyal fan base. They reunited several times, most recently in 2020 to commemorate the band’s 30th anniversary. Throughout their career, The Black Crowes sold over 30 million records.
In addition to his work with The Black Crowes, Chris Robinson pursued a successful solo career. He released his first solo recording, “The Red Road,” in 2002. Following its inclusion in the film “The Banger Sisters,” he released his debut solo album, “New Earth Mud,” which received positive reviews. Robinson formed a band called New Earth Mud and embarked on a tour across the United States, showcasing jam-oriented performances. He released his second album, “This Magnificent Distance,” in 2004, which achieved even greater commercial success.
Chris Robinson also formed the Chris Robinson Brotherhood in 2011 and launched a two-month tour in California. The group released albums like “Big Moon Ritual” and “The Magic Door.” Additionally, he created a band called As the Crow Flies in 2018, featuring former members of The Black Crowes, to perform their well-known songs. Robinson also worked as a music producer, collaborating with various artists in the late 2000s.
In 1996, Chris Robinson married Lala Sloatman, the niece of musician Frank Zappa. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1998. In December of 2000, he married actress Kate Hudson, whom he met at a live performance of “The Kids in the Hall.” They had a son together in 2004 but announced their separation in 2006 and eventually divorced in 2007. Robinson then married Allison Bridges in 2009, and they had a daughter before divorcing in 2018. In 2020, he married Camille Johnson.
