Pixar comes up short in Monsters, Inc., an imaginative but overly sanitized kid film. When a child accidentally crosses over to the monster world, best friends Sulley and Mike find her and attempt to return her back to the human world before a panic sweeps Monstropolis. Though the idea of a Monsters, Inc., a company that collects children's scares as a source of energy, is incredibly interesting, Pixar veers away from it and instead focuses on the shenanigans of chasing around a toddler. Additionally, the message of the film is extremely preachy and does so at the expense of the storytelling. Still, John Goodman and Billy Crystal deliver the comedy especially well and elevate the material. There's some fun and excitement to Monsters, Inc., but it's trying too hard to be cute and goofy.
