Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Sidney Lumet's last movie as a director, before he died in 2011, was this crime drama... and what a drama it was! No wonder that it was selected as one of 2007's ten most influential American films by the American Film Institute at the 2007 AFI Awards calling the director "a living treasure". A real pleasure to watch, involving all senses and existing emotions. Written by Kelly Masterson, the film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei, and Albert Finney. The title comes from the Irish saying: "May you be in heaven a full half-hour before the devil knows you're dead". The beauty of the story is that unfolds non-linearly, repeatedly going back and forth in time, with some scenes shown from various points of view, making a mosaic of tragic events and misjudgements where there is no winner at the end! All protagonists are connected on many levels and we are slowly discovering all these connections through the movie. Andy Hanson (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a finance executive at a real estate firm in New York City and is facing an upcoming audit which will reveal huge amounts missing from his employer in support of his drug habit. He wants to escape to Brazil, and to raise the necessary funds for the trip he hatches a scheme and enlists the aid of his brother, Hank (Ethan Hawke), himself in need of money. Hank, meanwhile, has been having a long-standing affair with Andy's wife, Gina (Marisa Tomei), who has been unsatisfied with her marriage. Very intricate exploration of family dysfunction in such a way that I could not find any possible faults with it, while it's coolly controlled examination of increasingly insane criminal ineptitude is to be remembered by many. The great master Sidney Lumet delivered, as his last artwork, a hypnotizing film for the next generations, to be remembered for many, many years by its intensity!
