John Madden returned to San Mateo and played football for another season after healing from his original injury. After that, he joined the Mustangs at California Polytechnic State University, where he played both offense and defense.

Once more, Madden demonstrated his value as a football player by becoming a dominant offensive tackle and earning all-conference recognition. In addition to receiving a BS in education, he played catcher for the college baseball team. In 1961, he received an MA in education.
